As part of our series on Historic Victoria Advertisements, Women’s Clothing, 1900-1909, here is a January 1909 advertisement for Angus Campbell & Co., “The Ladies Store” which operated from the Promis Block, 1010 Government Street, for over three decades.

The Promis Block, where Angus Campbell & Co. was located, is still standing at 1006-1010 Government Street. It is a Victoria Heritage Building and is listed on the Canadian Register of Historic Places as the “Promise Block“. [Note: “Promise” is a misprint. It should be “Promis” as shown in the advertisement above.]
The Promis Block, 1006-1010 Government Street, was built in 1905 by architects Thomas Hooper and C. Elwood Watkins for Oscar Promis of the Promis Estate Company, San Jose, California.
