The opening night production at the Royal Theatre on 29 December 1913 was a performance of Kismet, starring the American actor Otis Skinner, who had starred in the 1911 Broadway production of Kismet.

The Variety Theater, at 1600 Government Street, had originally been built in 1913 as the Kinema Colour Theater.

The building is now mixed use commercial space with condominiums.
