As part of our series on Historic Victoria Advertisements, Automobiles & Transportation, 1910-1919, here are two 1913 advertisements for Indian motorcycles, from Thomas Plimley Limited, 727-731 Johnson Street and 730 Yates Street.
Thomas Plimley Limited was a long running Victoria business which operated at several locations during its decades of activity. In the first decades of the 20th century it was located at 727-731 Johnson Street and 730 Yates Street, as shown in the advertisements above.
Here is a link to a photograph of the Thomas Plimley garage at 727 Johnson Street, circa 1910.
These buildings at 727 Johnson Street and 730 Yates Street would have backed onto each other and would likely have been connected when Thomas Plimley operated there in 1913. Yates Street runs parallel to Johnson Street one block south of Johnson Street, so the rear sections of these buildings would have adjacent to each other while their frontages were on Johnson Street and Yates Street respectively.
The building at 730 Yates Street is no longer standing but the building at 727-731 Johnson Street, built in 1910, is still standing and was given a large scale renovation in 2017.
