A Brief History of 706-714 Fort Street

This building was built in 1911-1912 for Mrs. A.M. Brown. Throughout its history it has remained a hotel on the upper floors with stores at street level.

The original building permit, issued to Mrs. A.M. Brown by the City of Victoria in June 1911, describes a “new brick building. Four storey, 75 rooms. Purpose: stores”. Despite the description of “stores” this building opened as a hotel on the upper four floors with stores at street levels. It still retains that configuration.

At the time the original building permit was issued in 1911, the estimated construction cost was $55,000.

It is currently operated as the Ritz Hotel with 95 apartments on the upper floors.
