This building was originally built in 1893 by the B.C. Land & Investment Company. a British firm which channeled British capital into British Columbia real estate and infrastructure projects. Prior to the start of World War One in 1914, Britain was the primary source of foreign investment capital in British Columbia and the B.C. Land & Investment Company was one of the leading investment firms representing British investors in British Columbia.
In 1894 the building was occupied by the Strand Hotel.
